India and Germany Enhance Defence Ties with Joint Declaration

NEW DELHI: India and Germany have announced new defence cooperation measures, including a Joint Declaration of Intent. This agreement aims to strengthen military-to-military ties, focusing on technology partnerships and joint exercises. The leaders expressed satisfaction with ongoing collaborations and efforts to enhance defence industrial cooperation.

NEW DELHI: In a significant step towards bolstering their defence and security relationship, India and Germany announced a series of strategic measures on Monday. At the heart of this initiative is a Joint Declaration of Intent aimed at developing a Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap, which focuses on technology partnerships, co-development, and co-production of defence platforms and equipment.

During the meeting held in New Delhi, both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz lauded the outcomes of the High Defence Committee meeting. This gathering reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing military-to-military cooperation and establishing systematic service staff talks, aligning military objectives and interests more closely. According to the Prime Minister's Office, the leaders discussed deepening ties through joint exercises and reciprocal company visits, further solidifying the strategic partnership established long ago.

The collaboration highlights ongoing efforts, including Germany's intent to participate in upcoming naval exercises such as MILAN and the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium. These maneuvers, along with past aerial exercises involving Germany's Eurofighter Typhoon, underscore a growing trend in military engagement between the two countries. Notably, the announcement of Germany deploying a liaison officer to the Information Fusion Centre-Indian Ocean Region reflects Germany's commitment to increasing its footprint in regional security matters, which is expected to significantly enhance operational cooperation.

Both leaders emphasized the positive assessments of joint projects, including the Eurodrone MALE UAV program and submarine construction initiatives, particularly the ongoing Project-75. This project, a strategic collaboration with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, focuses on developing advanced submarine technology and is seen as fundamental for both nations' naval capabilities.

As India and Germany referenced their shared goals and the complementarity of their strengths, they acknowledged the importance of a skilled workforce from India and high-tech investment from Germany. The discussions also pointed to further avenues of cooperation in peacekeeping training, logistics support, and exchanges in new defence technologies.

The strengthened partnership represents a commitment to not only improve defence capabilities but also to reinforce a strategic alliance that has been developing since 2000, evolving through regular consultations at the highest governmental levels. These steps reflect an acknowledgment of each nation's strengths in enhancing regional and global security.
