Pakistan Supreme Court Orders Medical Review for Imran Khan's Vision Loss

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has ordered a medical team to assess former Prime Minister Imran Khan's significant vision loss. Khan, imprisoned since 2023, reported losing 85% of his sight due to delayed medical attention. His party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, demands immediate access to specialized care.

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan’s Supreme Court has mandated the formation of a medical team to evaluate former Prime Minister Imran Khan's alarming health condition, with reports indicating he has lost approximately 85% of vision in his right eye. The court’s directive came following claims from Khan and his supporters that he has not received adequate medical attention while incarcerated.

Imran Khan, who is currently serving a sentence related to corruption charges, reportedly communicated to his attorney that his eyesight has significantly worsened over recent months. His lawyer, Salman Safdar, revealed that Khan had normal vision up until several months ago, but persistent blurred vision led to a late diagnosis of a damaging blood clot in his eye, ultimately resulting in severe vision loss.

Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has condemned the authorities for their neglect, asserting that this situation could have been prevented with timely medical intervention. PTI has threatened legal action if Khan does not receive immediate and unrestricted access to specialized medical care, including consultations with his personal physicians.

The Islamabad hospital, where Khan was admitted for a brief procedure, had claimed two weeks prior that he was in good health. However, Khan’s family has insisted that they were not consulted regarding his medical treatment, raising concerns about the transparency of his care.

Khan, despite facing substantial legal and health challenges, remains a central figure in Pakistan's political landscape. His ousting in April 2022 through a parliamentary vote has been described by him as the result of a conspiracy involving U.S. interests and local political rivalry—claims that have been categorically denied by U.S. officials and his political rivals. The outcome of this health crisis could have significant ramifications not just for Khan, but for the broader political climate in Pakistan as well.
