UTTAR PRADESH: In a sweeping move, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has published the draft electoral rolls for Uttar Pradesh, revealing a concerning reduction of 18.7% of voters from the previous list. This update follows an earlier scheduled release date of December 31, which was postponed to January 6, 2026, to allow for additional verification of potentially deceased and relocated voters. The state’s Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, noted that the deadline for submitting claims and objections spans from January 6 to February 6, 2026.

The intensive voter registration effort yielded significant results, resulting in about 2.89 crore voters being placed in the "uncollectable" category. Notably, this accounts for a substantial reduction in the overall electorate in Uttar Pradesh, which previously consisted of around 15.44 lakh registered voters. The state capital, Lucknow, saw a particularly sharp decline, losing approximately 12 lakh registered voters. Factors for this vast pruning of the electoral list include reports of more than 1.25 crore voters having moved away, about 45.95 lakh deceased individuals, and instances of 23.59 lakh duplicate entries.

The impact of this revision is profound, as it entails a rigorous validation process designed to ensure that the electoral rolls reflect only eligible voters. Many residents may face difficulties if their names are absent from the draft list. For instance, citizens whose details no longer appear must provide evidence for their inclusion based on the 2003 electoral list or comply with other documentation requirements as directed by the ECI.

Moreover, the ECI will accept objections against the inclusion of around 12.55 crore names in the draft list, highlighting the importance of active participation from the electorate. Formal objections can be submitted either online through the designated portal or offline via local booth-level officers. This meticulous process ensures the integrity of the upcoming electoral rolls and underscores the ECI’s commitment to maintaining a transparent and accurate voting system.
