MUMBAI: In a significant turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance, known as Mahayuti, has crossed the crucial halfway mark in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, leading in 119 of the 227 seats. The results come as counting commenced on Friday, revealing that the opposition coalition, the Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA), trails with leads in just 71 seats. Reports indicate that other parties have secured leads in ten seats.

As of now, nine candidates have been officially declared winners, including four from Shiv Sena, three from BJP, and one from Congress. The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) also claimed two victories. Voter participation in these elections reached an impressive 52.94%, marking the second-best turnout since 1992, attracting nearly 12.5 million voters.

The election results are being scrutinized at 23 counting centers across Mumbai, fortified by tight security measures. Each center operates under the watchful eye of an appointed Election Returning Officer to ensure a transparent counting process. Among the notable results, BJP leader Shilpa Keluskar expressed her gratitude, stating, "I thank all the voters. I am here with such a decisive mandate due to their trust."

Despite the apparent success of the Mahayuti alliance, issues have emerged, including reports of discrepancies with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). One machine failed to display voting data for Ward 189, prompting the State Election Commission to withhold results until thorough verification is complete. Moreover, candidates from Shiv Sena (UBT) have raised objections regarding irregularities during vote counting, further complicating the outcome in specific wards.

The significance of this election extends beyond local governance. The BMC, known for its substantial budget exceeding ₹74,000 crores, has been a political battleground historically. The outcomes of this election will likely reshape the political landscape leading up to future state and national elections, influencing broader governance and policy frameworks in Maharashtra. As celebrations erupt in BJP offices, the party is also looking to build on this momentum in other civic bodies like Nagpur and Pune, proposing a challenge to opposition parties across the state.
