Bangladesh Votes in Pivotal Elections as Tarique Rahman Promises Clean Politics

DHAKA: Bangladesh is holding its first election in nearly two decades, with Tarique Rahman pledging a new era of transparency and anti-corruption. After 17 years of exile, Rahman aims to restore democracy and accountability in the nation. The elections move forward following the fall of Sheikh Hasina, amid hopes for a violence-free process.

DHAKA: Bangladesh went to the polls on Thursday for what is being heralded as the first genuinely free and fair elections in nearly two decades. Tarique Rahman, who has recently returned from 17 years in exile, is the main contender for the prime ministership. He emphasized his commitment to ending corruption and reviving the economy during an interview just before voting began. Rahman declared that if his party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), wins, it will adopt a "top down, no tolerance" policy towards corruption.

Historically, Bangladesh has been plagued by endemic corruption and political unrest, having seen numerous accusations of electoral fraud against the previous ruling party, the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The elections are seen as a chance to step away from the violence and misgovernance that characterized Hasina’s tenure, which resulted in a student-led uprising that culminated in her removal from power in the summer of 2024. Over 1,400 people died during the unrest, a stark reminder of the stakes involved.

Rahman's return to Bangladesh marks a significant moment for his party and supporters. He recognized the ongoing challenges but maintained hope. "We saw in the last regime that corruption was encouraged," Rahman stated, as he pointed to the urgent need for accountability in government. With 127 million registered voters and a heavy security presence, there is cautious optimism among citizens for a peaceful election day. Young voters expressed their excitement for participating in a democratic process that has been out of reach for years.

"This is the first credible election the country has had in 17 years," said Thomas Kean, a senior consultant for the Crisis Group. If the elections proceed smoothly, they could pave the way for a more stable and accountable governance system in Bangladesh. Rahman’s mission is not just for victory but for a transformative shift in the political landscape of the nation, aiming for a clean start after years marked by political strife.
