SRINAGAR: In a significant development, the Union Home Ministry is poised to convene a meeting of the high-powered committee established to discuss pressing issues related to Ladakh. A letter dispatched to Ladakh's Chief Secretary indicates that the meeting is scheduled for the latter part of January. The committee includes representatives from the Union Home Ministry, local administration, and leaders from Ladakh.
The Chief Secretary has been requested to consult with committee members regarding their availability and relay dates back to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). This upcoming meeting is particularly pivotal as it occurs after local leaders from the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have expressed considerable frustration over the delays, accentuating their agitation for increased autonomy and constitutional protections for the region.
The demands, which include statehood and categorization under the Sixth Schedule, were formally presented to the MHA in a 29-page draft. The situation escalated significantly following protests on September 24, 2022, which resulted in four fatalities and injuries to nearly 100 individuals, including law enforcement officers. The unrest occurred in response to the prevailing disenfranchisement felt by the residents, culminating in extensive property damage, including the burning of a Bharatiya Janata Party office.
The discussions between Ladakh's leadership and the Government of India were last held on October 22, 2022, in New Delhi. As tensions continue, the meeting set for January holds substantial importance for both the local populace and the officials aimed at mitigating the unrest and responding to demands for greater governance and security within Ladakh.
