U.S. Lawmakers Pressure Trump to Lower Indian Tariffs on Pulse Crops

NEW YORK: U.S. Senators Daines and Cramer urged President Trump to advocate for lower tariffs on pulse crops during trade talks with India. They emphasized the competitive disadvantage American farmers face and the potential benefits for both countries. The senators have raised this issue before, highlighting its importance to U.S. agriculture.

NEW YORK: In a decisive move highlighting the ongoing trade relationship between the United States and India, U.S. Senators Steve Daines of Montana and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota have formally urged President Donald Trump to advocate for reduced tariffs on pulse crops in any upcoming trade negotiations with India. The senators argue that American producers are at a significant disadvantage due to what they deem "unfair" tariffs imposed by New Delhi.

In a letter addressed to Trump, dated January 16, Daines and Cramer emphasized their states’ positions as the top producers of pulse crops, such as peas and lentils, while noting that India represents the world’s largest consumer of these products, accounting for nearly 27% of global consumption. The senators pointed out that India has recently imposed a 30% tariff on yellow peas, which has severely affected American exports and highlighted the challenges faced by U.S. farmers.

The letter states, “As a result of the unfair Indian tariffs, U.S. pulse crop producers face a significant competitive disadvantage when exporting their high-quality product to India.” They believe that engaging with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue could enhance economic cooperation between the two nations, yielding benefits for American farmers as well as consumers in India.

Daines and Cramer expressed gratitude for Trump's efforts to foster a favorable environment for agriculture in their states, urging him to prioritize favorable provisions for pulse crops as negotiations continue. Reflecting on past interactions, they recalled how their previous letter to Trump helped to raise the issue during negotiations in 2020, reinforcing the ongoing need to address trade disparities.

As the U.S. seeks to rebalance trade relations, the senators are passionate about increasing agricultural exports to India, indicating a readiness among American farmers to meet global demands if supported by appropriate trade agreements. This latest push underscores the critical importance of agriculture in U.S.-India trade relations and the ongoing discussions aimed at ensuring fair access for American producers.
