MUMBAI: An unprecedented political alliance between BJP and Congress has emerged in Ambernath Municipal Council, toppling the Shiv Sena. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis quickly condemned these local alliances as undisciplined. The partnership has resulted in suspensions within both the BJP and Congress, prompting widespread political unease ahead of upcoming civic polls.
MUMBAI: In a surprising political maneuver, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formed an alliance with the Indian National Congress in the Ambernath Municipal Council, challenging the dominance of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. This unprecedented collaboration has raised eyebrows and stirred tensions among party lines as both opposition leaders and supporters have voiced their concerns.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his dissatisfaction on Wednesday, condemning local BJP factions that participated in these unlikely alliances and instructing that all such collaborations be dismantled immediately. “I am making it very clear that any alliance with the Congress or the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen will not be accepted. It is wrong in terms of discipline,” Fadnavis stated, underscoring a commitment to maintaining party integrity.
The unusual coalition, which also includes members from the Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction), has led to internal turbulence within both the BJP and Congress. The Congress party took swift action, suspending its 12 newly-elected Ambernath councillors in response to the backlash. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee Vice President Ganesh Patil confirmed the suspensions as part of a damage control strategy, citing a deviation from party principles.
The newly formed alliance, dubbed the "Ambernath Vikas Aghadi," resulted in the election of BJP councillor Tejashree Karanjule Patil as council president. Critics, particularly from the Shiv Sena, denounced this collaboration as "opportunistic" and a betrayal of longstanding political ethics. “This goes against our coalition dharma,” stated Shiv Sena MLA Dr. Balaji Kinikar, emphasizing the ideological conflict between the parties.
BJP’s alliance strategy also saw a similar partnership with the AIMIM in the Akot Municipal Council, underscoring a dramatic shift in Maharashtra's political landscape. This trend of unexpected alliances has raised significant questions regarding party loyalties and the impact on upcoming civic elections, with many citizens expressing concern over the motivations behind these newly formed coalitions.
