Telangana RTC Strike Ends; Bus Services Resume Tomorrow

HYDERABAD: The indefinite strike by the Telangana Road Transport Corporation has been called off, effective Saturday. After extensive negotiations, the government addressed 31 out of 32 demands by employees, allowing bus services to resume. The strike began in support of various worker demands and had caused significant disruptions.

HYDERABAD: The indefinite strike by the Telangana Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has come to an end following successful negotiations between the Joint Action Committee (JAC) and the state government. The strike, which began on April 22, had caused major disruptions for commuters across Telangana, but services are set to resume starting Saturday morning after marathon discussions late into the night.

The negotiations took place between the JAC and a group of ministers led by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who stated that extensive talks lasted for over seven hours. The RTC employees had initially presented a list of 32 demands, and the government has agreed to resolve 31 of them, seeking more time only for the implementation of the Pay Revision Commission's (PRC) recommended salary structures. Bhatti emphasized the financial burden this single issue presents for the corporation and the state budget.

Key issues discussed included the merger of the TGSRTC with the state government, PRC implementation, and the reinstatement of unions that were abolished in 2019. Bhatti acknowledged the preoccupations of the ministers due to legislative challenges like the ongoing Budget session and other significant state matters. The minister also expressed sympathy for the family of a deceased RTC employee, whose tragic death during the protest had heightened tensions.

To provide support for the deceased employee's family, the state announced a financial assistance package of ₹10 lakh, a job for an eligible family member, and housing provisions. The announcement helped de-escalate the situation, allowing the family to conduct the last rites of the employee with respect and dignity.

The successful resolution of the strike not only paves the way for normal public transportation services across Telangana but also highlights the vital role of dialogue and negotiation in addressing labor disputes and ensuring worker rights.
