India’s Sukhoi-57 Chosen as Counter to China's Military Advances

NEW DELHI: India has selected the Sukhoi Su-57 as its first fifth-generation fighter jet to strengthen defenses against China. Reports indicate sustained interest in the aircraft from several foreign countries; however, tangible sales remain elusive. The debates surrounding the aircraft also reflect significant geopolitical implications amid modern aerial warfare.

NEW DELHI: India has officially chosen the Sukhoi Su-57 as its primary fifth-generation stealth fighter jet, a strategic decision underscoring its stance against Chinese military advancements. The Su-57, notably the export model known as the Su-57E, continues to gain prominence at international air shows, including its recent performance at the Dubai Airshow. This high-profile showcasing has been part of Russia's aggressive push to secure foreign sales amid growing global interest.

According to Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation Director Dmitry Shugayev, "Negotiations with several foreign countries on supplying Sukhoi Su-57 aircraft are planned during these airshow events. Today, we can confirm that there is sustained interest in the fighter jet from foreign nations.” However, despite this ongoing interest, the sale of the Su-57 has yet to materialize beyond Algeria's commitment to purchasing about a dozen jets.

Critics have highlighted that while the Su-57 dazzles crowds with its aerial capabilities, the reality of modern warfare reveals limitations in its design. The grip of combat has shifted, focusing more on stealth and beyond-visual range engagements rather than close aerial maneuvers. "Today’s aerial combat often occurs outside the visual range, meaning traditional displays of aerial agility, while impressive, may not translate effectively to real-world combat scenarios,” noted a defense analyst.

The ongoing geopolitical tensions further complicate matters, with India’s choice reflecting a need to bolster air defense capabilities amid escalating situations with China. Notably, the Russian government has refrained from deploying its fifth-generation aircraft inactive conflict zones, such as the Ukraine, likely to preserve its operational reputation for future sales.

In essence, while the Sukhoi Su-57 continues to capture attention at air shows globally, experts caution that continued reliance on theatrical displays will not inherently secure robust sales. As geopolitical landscapes shift, India’s commitment to the Su-57 illustrates an evolving defense strategy in response to surrounding threats.
