KOLKATA: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken a significant step by approaching the Calcutta High Court, claiming that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee obstructed an ongoing investigation into money laundering linked to the 2020 coal scam. The agency filed a petition alleging that during search operations conducted at the premises associated with the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), Banerjee interfered with law enforcement officers carrying out their duties.
According to the ED, their investigations at the residential address of I-PAC director Pratik Jain and the consultancy’s office in Salt Lake, Kolkata, had been proceeding without incident until Banerjee arrived accompanied by senior police officials. The ED's filed statement asserts that the Chief Minister unlawfully entered the premises, allegedly removing crucial evidence such as documents and electronic devices. The agency emphasizes the legality of its actions, insisting they are grounded in a broader investigation into money laundering and hawala transactions associated with coal smuggling from 2020.
In a retaliatory move, Banerjee has accused the ED of being employed by the central government to seize sensitive election-related materials from I-PAC, which plays a vital role in managing the Trinamool Congress's election campaigns. Furthermore, the Bidhannagar police have registered FIRs against members of the ED's raiding party, alleging criminal intimidation and trespass, thus escalating the conflict between the state government and federal agencies.
This clash comes at a politically charged time, closer to the 2026 Assembly Elections in West Bengal, raising concerns about the implications of such confrontations on the electoral landscape and the integrity of investigative processes. Banerjee's impeccable ability as a political strategist will be further tested as tensions mount.
