NEW DELHI: A significant controversy erupted at the India AI Impact Expo when Galgotias University, a private institution, exhibited a commercially available Chinese robot dog as part of its innovations. The university had been allocated an impressive 155-square-metre booth, exceeding the combined space of four prominent Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), which received a total of just 130 square metres. This incident has ignited discussions about the criteria and process for allotting space at such a high-profile event showcasing India's advances in technology.

The exhibition was organized by the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), which operated on a first-come, first-served basis without thorough vetting of the products or technologies displayed by the exhibitors. Galgotias' allocation was based solely on demand, raising questions about the selection standards in place. While the IITs displayed projects like AI-enabled flood alert systems and advanced speech synthesis methods, Galgotias University faced backlash when the robot it presented was later identified as a product developed by China's Unitree Robotics.

Officials highlighted that the aim of the expo was to showcase original technologies and discourage misleading claims. “We expect all exhibitors to adhere to the principles of authenticity and innovation,” stated S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The incident prompted authorities to request Galgotias to vacate their booth following public outcry over the misrepresentation.

The allocation sparked a debate about the responsibilities of institutions representing India at such an impactful event. Abhishek Singh, CEO of the IndiaAI Mission, remarked that breaches of agreement by exhibitors impact the integrity of an event meant to promote genuine advancements in artificial intelligence. Following the uproar, Galgotias University issued an apology, emphasizing their intent to present contributions to AI development rather than misleading the public.

This incident not only tarnishes the university's reputation but also reflects broader implications for how tech showcases are structured in India. As these events aim to put the country's innovation on the global map, maintaining standards of authenticity is crucial in fostering trust and encouraging advancements in the booming tech sector.
