Allahabad Court Orders FIR Against Rahul Gandhi Over Alleged British Citizenship

ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court directed the filing of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi over alleged British citizenship claims. This ruling follows a plea from a BJP worker who argued Gandhi holds foreign citizenship and should face multiple legal charges. The decision overturns a previous court ruling that had refused to allow the FIR.

ALLAHABAD: In a significant legal development, the Allahabad High Court (Lucknow Bench) has ordered the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, over claims regarding his alleged British citizenship. This directive comes following a plea submitted by Karnataka BJP worker Vignesh Shishir, challenging an earlier decision made by a Lucknow Court which dismissed a request for an FIR against Gandhi.

The bench, presided over by Justice Subhash Vidyarthi, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the allegations. The court's order sets aside a prior resolution made by an Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Court, which found no grounds for the filing of an FIR. Shishir's petition asserts that Gandhi is not only a UK citizen but has also registered a company—M/S Backops Ltd.—in the UK, drawing attention to various documents he allegedly submitted which indicate his British nationality.

Key to Shishir's allegations, the court was informed that Gandhi had declared his overseas business interests during the 2004 Lok Sabha Elections, including disclosures about overseas bank accounts linked to Barclays Bank in London. The petitioner has urged the court to hold Gandhi accountable under multiple legal frameworks, such as the Foreigners Act and the Official Secrets Act, claiming that Gandhi's dual citizenship, if verified, undermines his position in Indian politics.

Legal representatives are expected to present responses as this high-profile case unfolds, which could have significant implications for Gandhi's political career amid ongoing debates about transparency and accountability among leaders. This ruling reflects growing tensions and broader scrutiny of politicians regarding their international ties and citizenship statuses, a matter vital to voters who expect representatives to maintain clear affiliations with India.
