Nepal’s Balen Shah’s RSP Claims Majority in Historic Election Victory

KATHMANDU: Balendra Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has secured a parliamentary majority in the recent elections held on March 5. Shah, who rose to prominence as a rapper and mayor, defeated former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli in a significant political upset. This election marks a pivotal moment in Nepal’s political landscape following the 2025 anti-corruption protests.

KATHMANDU: In a groundbreaking political shift, Balendra Shah's Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has emerged victorious in Nepal’s most recent elections, securing a commanding majority in the direct parliamentary elections held on March 5. Shah, known for his previous career as a rapper, won the seat formally held by former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, marking a remarkable ascent from city mayor to a potential prime minister. Current trends indicate the RSP is also leading substantially in the proportional representation vote.

This election marks the first since the violent September 2025 protests, led predominantly by the youth, which toppled the previous government amidst widespread calls for accountability and economic reform. The protests sparked initially over a brief social media ban but evolved into a larger movement against corruption and economic struggles facing the nation. The election results are a striking reflection of public sentiment amidst ongoing political instability.

As of March 8, the counting of votes showed that the RSP had claimed 117 of the 153 declared direct election seats, sharply outpacing the Nepali Congress and Marxist parties. Poll monitors from the Asian Network for Free Elections reported that the election was conducted peacefully, showcasing continued public engagement in democratic processes throughout challenging times. Shah's popularity continues to soar, with supporters chanting his name during a victory parade on the evening of March 7, as he celebrated with overwhelming community support.

Despite the jubilant atmosphere, the shadow of the past looms, with a government-formed investigation commission submitting its report on the tragic September violence. As of yet, accountability for the tragic events remains unfulfilled, complicating an already challenging political landscape. Shah’s dramatic victory not only signifies a new chapter for the RSP but potentially reshapes the future of governance in Nepal.
