Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns From Allahabad High Court Amid Cash Probe

DELHI: Justice Yashwant Varma has resigned from the Allahabad High Court, halting a parliamentary investigation into a cash-at-home scandal revealing unaccounted money. His resignation, citing deep anguish, effectively ends impeachment proceedings initiated due to a fire incident at his official residence. Varma's departure has stirred controversy, with former Law Minister Kapil Sibal defending him against allegations of political motives behind the impeachment.

DELHI: Justice Yashwant Varma has officially resigned from his position at the Allahabad High Court, a move that effectively puts an end to the parliamentary investigation stemming from a controversial fire incident at his official residence. The scandal involved the discovery of a significant amount of unaccounted cash, which has ignited public and political scrutiny.

In his resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Justice Varma expressed “deep anguish” and conveyed appreciation for his time in office. This unexpected resignation effectively halts the impeachment proceedings initiated against him earlier this year, which had been stalled due to the retirement of a member of the inquiry committee formed to investigate the allegations.

The troubles for Justice Varma began back in March 2025 when a fire broke out in his official residence in Delhi. Responders found unaccounted cash amidst the chaos, raising serious questions about the source and legality of the funds. Footage of currency burning during the incident added further fuel to the controversy. Despite inquiries by a three-member Supreme Court panel that ultimately deemed Justice Varma’s explanations insufficient, the case had been mired in procedural delays and political tensions.

While Justice Varma's resignation may bring relief to the judiciary by closing a contentious chapter, it also raises concerns about political interference in judicial matters. Notably, former Law Minister Kapil Sibal has characterized the impeachment process as unconstitutional and politically motivated, suggesting that the government is selectively enforcing accountability among judges.

As the political landscape shifts in the wake of this incident, it remains to be seen how Justice Varma's resignation will influence the ongoing debate surrounding judicial independence and the integrity of the impeachment process in India. With 146 Members of Parliament supporting the removal motion, voices of dissent continue to question the underlying motives of the government, a sentiment that could have far-reaching implications for India's judicial system.
