DELHI: The Election Commission of India has announced that the Kerala Assembly elections will take place in a single phase on April 9, 2026, followed by the counting of votes on May 4. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stressed the importance of including all eligible voters in the electoral roll while adhering to constitutional mandates. During a press briefing, he emphasized the commission's commitment to a transparent and fair election process.
According to the commission, every citizen aged 18 years and older is entitled to vote, and special efforts will be made to ensure that no eligible voter is excluded. "We have rolled out more than 30 new initiatives aimed at making the voting process smoother and more efficient,” Kumar stated, highlighting measures such as the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. He assured voters that the election environment would be strictly monitored to prevent inducements and violence, with clear guidelines issued to enforcement agencies.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has revealed its intent to contest 86 of the 140 Assembly seats in Kerala, with 56 sitting Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) expected to seek re-election. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will be contesting from the Dharmadom constituency, reinforcing the party's strategy to maintain its influence in the state.
Kumar also discussed arrangements for accessibility at polling stations, targeting the elderly, including centenarians and those aged 85 or above. Approximately 2.18 lakh polling stations will be set up across rural areas, designed to accommodate diverse voter needs with special booths for women and persons with disabilities. Additionally, representatives from electoral commissions from over 20 countries will observe the forthcoming elections, underscoring India's commitment to transparent electoral practices.
As preparations continue for the polls, the focus remains on building public trust and ensuring that democracy thrives through active participation in the upcoming electoral process.
