Two US Navy warships, the USS Frank E. Peterson and the USS Michael Murphy, have made a significant transit of the Strait of Hormuz, initiating efforts to clear mines laid by Iran, as confirmed by the US Central Command. This marks the first US naval operation in the strategic waterway since the escalation of conflict between the US and Iran earlier this year. The announcement comes as President Donald Trump stated the United States has commenced operations to "clear out" the strait, a vital passageway through which approximately a fifth of the world's crude oil is transported.

The operation, aimed at establishing a new maritime passage, was described by CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper who stated, “Today, we began the process of establishing a new passage and we will share this safe pathway with the maritime industry soon to encourage the free flow of commerce.” US military officials note that additional assets, including underwater drones, may be deployed to assist in this mission in the coming days.

In stark contrast, Iranian military officials vehemently denied the assertion that US vessels transited the strait, claiming that entry into the waterway is strictly under the jurisdiction of the Islamic Republic. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, a spokesperson for Iran's military, asserted that any foreign military vessel crossing the strait would be dealt with "severely".

Tensions in the region have escalated since the commencement of the US-Israeli bombing campaign against Iran, which began on February 28. Despite claims of a ceasefire, the Strait of Hormuz has remained a focal point of conflict, potentially impacting global oil markets.
