NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has decided to refrain from attending house sessions while a no-confidence motion against him is under discussion. This decision stems from alleged bias in handling opposition members' concerns. Despite no formal rules demanding his absence, sources reveal that Birla will not re-enter the House until a definitive resolution is reached. The no-confidence motion that has been tabled against him is set for discussion on March 9, coinciding with the beginning of the second phase of the Union Budget session.

The alleged irregularities in parliamentary proceedings have caught the attention of several party leaders. RJD MP Sudhakar Singh voiced his concerns over bills impacting farmers, while Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee criticized perceived favoritism in budget allocations favoring ruling allies over opposition-ruled states. Banerjee highlighted instances, like the freight corridor project, which he argued have roots in earlier initiatives by the West Bengal Chief Minister.

Furthermore, the opposition's collective frustration has manifested in the renewal of their no-confidence challenge against Birla, spearheaded by Congress representatives. Gaurav Gogoi noted that the motion has garnered the signatures of approximately 119 Members of Parliament, reflecting overwhelming opposition support. This standoff hints at deepening divisions between the treasury and opposition benches, raising significant questions regarding the democratic process in the Lok Sabha.

Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for transparency in trade agreements and decision-making processes. The ongoing actions by the Speaker, according to Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant, undermine democracy by limiting debate and stifling dissent within parliamentary walls. As political tensions escalate, the budget session remains a key battleground for asserting the autonomy and voice of the opposition, making it imperative for timely resolutions to be reached.
