TAMIL NADU: The Governor insists on proof of majority from TVK before a floor test. TVK reaches out to Left parties and VCK for support in forming the government. With 108 seats, TVK needs additional backing to secure a majority.
TAMIL NADU: In a significant political development, the Tamil Nadu Governor has insisted that the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) submit proof of majority before allowing a floor test in the Assembly. This demand comes as TVK, led by Vijay, seeks to cement its position in the state government following their impressive electoral debut, where they won 108 seats but fell short of an outright majority.
To navigate this politically precarious situation, TVK leader CTR Nirmal Kumar has initiated contact with the Left parties and the Vanniyar Sangam (VCK), urging them to join forces and support TVK in government formation. “We are reaching out to ensure that we have a collaborative effort in governance,” Kumar stated after meeting with CPI state secretary M Veerapandian and CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam. He handed over letters assuring a share in power and reiterated that only through collaboration can parties implement their ideologies effectively.
As uncertainty looms, Kumar expressed confidence that TVK will be able to form a government, citing a mandate from the people as a critical factor in the political calculus. "The people have voted for TVK, and the Governor must recognize this and invite us to form the government," he asserted, indicating that they are prepared to face the necessary floor test.
Despite securing support from the Congress, which won five seats, TVK still requires assistance from at least five additional MLAs to assure a stable majority. Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing among other political parties, with some leaders within the VCK advocating for alignment with TVK, given grievances during their prior coalition with the DMK-led alliance.
As the political landscape evolves, the actions taken over the next few days will have major implications for governance in Tamil Nadu, particularly as the TVK stresses the importance of adhering to the democratic mandate from the state's electorate.
