DELHI: In a significant technological advancement for public safety, India has officially launched its indigenous Cell Broadcast messaging system designed to provide real-time disaster alerts to its citizens. The initiative, introduced on Saturday, saw a nationwide test alert sent out at around 11:42 AM, marking a crucial step in enhancing the country’s disaster communication framework.

The alert issued by the Government of India stated, “Alert citizens, safe nation. No action is required by the public upon receipt of this message. This is a test message.” This broad communication initiative is meant to ensure that critical information reaches the populace effectively during emergencies such as natural disasters and wars. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) further emphasized the importance of this system on social media, describing it as a step forward in bolstering how communication is managed during critical situations.

Developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) in conjunction with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the Integrated Alert System, also known as SACHET, allows for the simultaneous delivery of messages to all mobile devices within a designated area. Unlike traditional SMS alerts, this new Cell Broadcast technology enhances the speed and efficiency of emergency notifications, symbolizing a notable improvement in India's disaster management capabilities.

The new system is designed to complement existing SMS-based alerts, which have already proven effective with over 134 billion messages dispatched in numerous languages. The integration of Cell Broadcast technology aims to improve response times in high-priority emergencies like earthquakes, tsunamis, and hazardous material leaks. Once fully operational, alerts will be accessible to all mobile handsets, ensuring comprehensive outreach throughout all 36 states and Union Territories of India.

As citizens enable alert notifications through their mobile settings, authorities are optimistic that this step will help create a more aware and prepared public, ultimately fostering a greater sense of safety in the face of unforeseen disasters.
