KOLKATA: India is set to mark a significant advance in railway modernization with the launch of its first-ever Vande Bharat sleeper train, scheduled for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This inaugural service will operate between Howrah in West Bengal and Guwahati in Assam, aimed at enhancing overnight connectivity and modernizing long-distance travel within the country.

During his forthcoming visit to West Bengal and Assam, PM Modi will flag off the Vande Bharat sleeper train at Malda Town railway station. The train, designed for overnight journeys, will differ from existing Vande Bharat trains by featuring sleeping berths instead of chair cars, enabling passengers to enjoy a restful travel experience. The new service is expected to significantly reduce travel times and provide improved comfort for long journeys.

The Vande Bharat sleeper train is equipped with 16 coaches and can accommodate up to 823 passengers. The train will include a combination of AC three-tier, AC two-tier, and first-class coaches, all featuring modern amenities such as advanced suspension systems, upgraded toilets, and digital passenger information displays. According to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, fares have been made affordable, with prices estimated at around Rs 2,300 for AC three-tier and Rs 3,600 for first-class, which is notably lower than typical airfare for the same route.

Railway officials report that the introduction of this sleeper train will not only facilitate better travel experiences but also bolster economic and cultural ties between West Bengal and Assam. The service will halt at several key districts, thereby fostering greater connectivity across the regions. The successful testing and certification of the train mean that commercial services are expected to commence shortly, a milestone for India's semi-high-speed rail ambitions.
