CHENNAI: R. Nallakannu, a revered leader of the Communist movement in India, has passed away at the age of 101. The veteran politician and freedom fighter succumbed to his illnesses at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai on February 25, 2026. Fondly known as RNK among party circles, his long and eventful life was marked by an indomitable spirit dedicated to the principles of communism and social justice.

Throughout his political career, Nallakannu was a steadfast advocate for the rights of the marginalized. He remained loyal to the Communist Party of India during its split in 1964, following the Indo-China war. His tenure as Tamil Nadu State Secretary of the CPI starting in 1992 showcased his leadership, characterized by a relentless fight against corruption, particularly against the illegal activities of the sand mafia in the Thamirabarani river basin. In a landmark moment, he filed a Public Interest Litigation that successfully secured a stay order against unauthorized sand mining, demonstrating his commitment to protecting natural resources.

Born in 1925 in Srivaikundam, Thoothukudi district, Nallakannu's political journey began in his school days, influenced by India's independence struggle.
