NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Israel on February 25-26, a trip that aims to bolster the already strong bilateral ties between the two nations. During the visit, India and Israel are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on security cooperation, although no formal defense deals will be finalized at this stage. Both countries have ongoing defense collaborations estimated at approximately $10 billion.

One of the key topics during Modi's visit will be exploring joint development in the area of anti-ballistic missile defense. This initiative includes potential advancements in laser weapons, long-range stand-off missiles, and drone technologies. These projects were first discussed during the visit of Indian Defense Secretary R K Singh to Israel last November, when an MoU was signed to expand defense collaboration. Such efforts align with India’s Mission Sudershan, aimed at safeguarding Indian territory from long-range missile threats.

Notably, Israel is set to share its cutting-edge defense technologies with India, incorporating high-tech laser defense systems along with various stand-off systems. These technologies are essential for India as it looks to procure long-range missiles and loitering ammunition deployable from air, land, and sea platforms. The Indian Navy's interest in purchasing the extended-range Barak surface-to-air missile system also highlights the need for enhanced missile defense capabilities to safeguard naval operations.

The visit is not solely focused on defense; discussions will extend into science and technology, agriculture, and access to clean drinking water. Both nations also share a common goal in combating terrorism and address various geopolitical issues collaboratively. Modi's personal rapport with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is anticipated to play a crucial role in further solidifying these strategic defense ties during this important visit.
