BJP MP Seeks Rahul Gandhi's Disqualification Through Substantive Motion

DELHI: BJP MP Nishikant Dubey files a substantive motion seeking Rahul Gandhi's disqualification from Lok Sabha. He claims Gandhi has colluded with anti-India forces during visits to Southeast Asia. The Congress party rejects the claims, declaring they are not intimidated by BJP's motions.

DELHI: BJP Member of Parliament Nishikant Dubey has initiated a substantive motion in the Lok Sabha aimed at disqualifying Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, demanding not only the cancellation of his current membership but also a lifetime ban on him from contesting future elections. This contentious move, announced on February 12, 2026, is expected to further escalate the already heated political rivalry between the two major parties as they prepare for upcoming elections.

In his notice, Dubey accused Gandhi of colluding with what he terms "anti-India forces" during visits to Southeast Asian countries including Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia, with alleged ties to international organizations such as the Soros Foundation, Ford Foundation, and USAID. "We cannot allow leaders who engage with entities that undermine our national interests," Dubey stated, emphasizing his stance against Gandhi and the actions of the Congress party.

The procedural groundwork for the substantive motion is notable as it underlines the significant allegations made against a high-profile political figure. A substantive motion is a formal proposal presented to the House for consideration, aimed at eliciting a decisive action or opinion. If the motion is accepted by Speaker Om Birla, it would necessitate a formal debate within the Lok Sabha to determine the validity of Dubey's claims and the course of action regarding Gandhi's political future.

In response to the BJP's actions, Congress General Secretary K. C. Venugopal fired back, stating, "We are not concerned about these motions; we stand ready to defend ourselves." He highlighted the perceived injustice faced from parliamentary authorities, asserting that attempts to suppress Gandhi's voice during recent sessions were a desperate ploy by the ruling party. Venugopal underscored the resilience of Gandhi's political base, referencing previous successful elections following similar disruptions.

As these political maneuvers unfold, they illustrate the intense rivalry and ongoing tensions within India's political landscape, leaving citizens to watch closely how this latest development will impact the upcoming electoral contest.
