DELHI: Former Pune MP and senior Congress leader Suresh Kalmadi, known for his political influence and role in sports administration, passed away at 81. His death marks the conclusion of a prominent, yet controversial political career, characterized by both significant contributions and legal entanglements.

Kalmadi held various influential positions, including as a Member of Parliament and Union Minister, earning respect across party lines for his work in shaping local governance in Maharashtra. He was a central figure in Indian politics, representing Pune multiple times and serving several terms in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. Born on May 1, 1944, he started his career as an Indian Air Force pilot before shifting his focus to public service and sports administration, where he played a pivotal role as President of the Indian Olympic Association.

However, Kalmadi's illustrious career faced a major setback due to the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. As chairman of the organizing committee, he was implicated in a significant corruption scandal involving financial irregularities and fraud. The ensuing legal battles and allegations led to his arrest, overshadowing his political achievements and culminating in a tarnished reputation. Although the Enforcement Directorate later submitted a closure report suggesting no charges, the stigma of the scandal persisted, marking a decline in his political presence.

In his later years, Kalmadi withdrew from active politics, primarily due to health issues. Notably, NCP chief Sharad Pawar visited him shortly before his death, underlining Kalmadi’s enduring connection within Maharashtra’s political realm.
