WASHINGTON: Former US President Donald Trump has unveiled a bold proposal to raise the United States military budget for the fiscal year 2027 to an unprecedented $1.5 trillion, significantly up from the current allocation of $1 trillion. This increase is framed as a necessary response to national security demands and is backed by projected higher government revenues from tariffs imposed on various countries.

Trump communicated the proposal through a post on his social media platform, highlighting the intense negotiations he undertook with senators, congresspeople, and other key political figures. “For the good of our country, especially in these very troubled and dangerous times, our military budget for the year 2027 should not be $1 trillion, but rather $1.5 trillion,” he stated firmly. The proposed enhancement aims to create what he terms a “dream military,” ensuring the nation remains “safe and secure, regardless of foe.”

In further elaboration, Trump connected the proposed budget increase to the revenue generated from tariffs, asserting that these financial inflows have bolstered the US government's financial standing, allowing it to contemplate a more substantial defence budget. “If it weren’t for the tremendous numbers being produced by tariffs from other countries, I would stay at the $1 trillion number,” he admitted. Additionally, he suggested that the tariff-based revenue would also enable the government to reduce its debt and provide a “substantial dividend” for middle-income Americans while simultaneously establishing an unparalleled military force.

This announcement builds on previous indications of heightened defence spending under Trump's leadership.
