NEW DELHI: India has issued a travel advisory for its citizens regarding Iran, urging them to avoid non-essential travel due to escalating protests over inflation and the devaluation of the Iranian currency. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reported a deterioration in the situation following large-scale demonstrations across several Iranian cities.

In an official statement, the MEA advised, “In view of recent developments, Indian nationals are advised to avoid non-essential travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice.” This advisory extends to both Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) currently residing in Iran. The government has urged Indians already present in Iran to stay vigilant and avoid regions where protests or demonstrations are occurring. Additionally, the MEA recommended that long-term visa holders register with the Indian Embassy in Tehran if they have not already done so.

The protests, which began on December 28 in Tehran, started with shopkeepers striking over rising prices but quickly expanded to broader political demands, highlighting widespread discontent. Reports indicate that protests have erupted in at least 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces, particularly in small and medium-sized urban areas in the west. Tragically, clashes between demonstrators and security forces have resulted in at least 12 fatalities since late December, further escalating tensions within the country.

While the situation unfolds, international reactions are also surfacing. Notably, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued warnings against the Iranian authorities using lethal force on protestors, insisting that the United States is closely monitoring these developments. As citizens continue to demand change amidst a backdrop of economic hardship, the call for awareness and caution remains pivotal for Indian nationals in Iran.
