PUNJAB: Schools across the state of Punjab will remain closed until January 13 as the region grapples with a severe cold wave accompanied by dense fog. The announcement came from Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on January 7, highlighting the government's commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of students and school staff.

The closure applies to all government, aided, recognized, and private schools throughout Punjab. “Given the current weather conditions, it is critical that we prioritize the safety of students during their morning commutes,” Bains stated, emphasizing that the decision was made after a comprehensive review of the prevailing conditions. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s guidelines further reinforced the urgency of the situation.

The state is experiencing a significant drop in temperatures, with Bathinda recording a chilling low of 4.6 degrees Celsius. Other key cities reported similar trends; Amritsar saw temperatures at 7.5 degrees, Ludhiana at 6.6 degrees, and Patiala at 7.1 degrees. Poor visibility due to fog is exacerbating travel difficulties for students, prompting the government to act swiftly.

As the cold weather continues to impact daily activities, education officials remain vigilant. They are closely monitoring conditions, with plans to reassess the situation should temperatures and visibility not improve. Schools are scheduled to reopen on January 14, and the Education Department has instructed all school managements to adhere strictly to the government’s directives. This proactive response showcases the state’s prioritization of student safety amid the harsh winter conditions gripping Punjab.
