Tamil Nadu: Vijay Meets Governor Amid Political Deadlock and Uncertain Government Formation

TAMIL NADU: In a critical meeting for government formation, TVK leader Vijay met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar again amid ongoing political deadlock. TVK has won 108 seats but lacks the majority needed to form a government. The situation remains tense as various parties weigh their support options.

TAMIL NADU: Political uncertainty looms as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar for the second time in just 24 hours, seeking clarity on forming a government. The meeting happens amidst a complex landscape following the recent Assembly elections held on April 23, where TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats—a number still shy of the majority threshold of 118.

Following Vijay's request for the Governor to invite him to prove his majority, representatives from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have supported his bid, emphasizing that the Governor should act swiftly in favor of democratic processes. "The Governor needs to respect the electoral mandate," an IUML leader stated after the meeting. However, Governor Arlekar has so far refrained from extending the invitation, citing that the requisite majority support has not yet been established by TVK.

Adding layers of complexity to the situation, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Christopher Tilak highlighted their party's strategic decision to support TVK in order to curb the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) potential influence in Tamil Nadu. Tilak expressed confidence that a government could be formed within 10 days, especially with discussions underway with possible coalition partners that include Left parties and the VCK.

Meanwhile, the local political landscape is heating up as discussions heat up about the potential implications of a failed government configuration. DMK party leader M. K. Stalin convened a meeting with newly elected MLAs amid shifting alliance dynamics, potentially signaling a counter-campaign against TVK’s aspirations.

Protests are bubbling near Marina Beach as TVK supporters demand the Governor allow Vijay to claim his role as chief minister. The political atmosphere remains charged, and with various factions weighing their support, the next few days could prove decisive for Tamil Nadu politics.
