Minnesota Governor Prepares National Guard After Fatal ICE Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS: Governor Tim Walz prepares the National Guard following a fatal ICE shooting of a woman. The incident has sparked protests, with conflicting accounts from officials and local leaders. Protests may escalate as citizens demand justice and accountability.

MINNEAPOLIS: Tensions are escalating in Minnesota following the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent during an operation on Wednesday. Governor Tim Walz has issued an order to prepare the state’s National Guard, urging the public to pursue peaceful protests while condemning the shooting as "preventable" and "unnecessary."

At a news conference, Walz expressed outrage over the incident. “We have someone dead in their car for no reason whatsoever,” he stated, challenging claims from federal officials that the shooting was justified. The Department of Homeland Security maintains that Good was attempting to run over law enforcement officers when she was shot, a narrative disputed by the governor and Minneapolis officials. "This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying," said Mayor Jacob Frey, who argues that Good was not posing a threat.

In the wake of the shooting, which occurred less than a mile from where George Floyd was killed in May 2020, protests have erupted, with large crowds gathering at the scene. Videos from the area show police deploying crowd control measures, including tear gas and pepper spray, as some protesters throw snowballs, highlighting the growing unrest. Community leaders called for action against ICE, with Frey urging them to "get the f--- out" of Minneapolis.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump defended the officer's actions as "self-defense," further polarizing public opinion. As preparations by the National Guard continue, Walz has emphasized the importance of peaceful resistance, stating, “The desire to get out in protest and to speak up... is a patriotic duty at this moment in time." The governor's comments signal a statewide concern regarding public safety and governmental accountability in the face of federal operations.
