The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated a significant legal move by filing a petition with the Calcutta High Court, calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. This request follows allegations that Banerjee obstructed ED raids at the Indian Pac Consulting Private Limited (I-PAC) and the residence of its director, Pratik Jain, in Kolkata. The raids, conducted on Thursday, are part of a larger money laundering investigation linked to a notorious coal scam in the state.

In its petition, the ED claims that approximately ₹20 crore of Hawala funds, purportedly derived from coal pilferage activities, were funneled to I-PAC. The ED contends that during the raids, Banerjee entered Jain's residence and the I-PAC office, allegedly removing crucial documents and electronic evidence. This interference has prompted the ED to assert that Banerjee's actions have obstructed the ongoing investigation and proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

In addition to seeking judicial intervention for the seizure of evidence, the ED has requested that the High Court restore all digital devices and records it claims were "illegally and forcibly" taken during the search operations. The agency argues that its officials were barred from executing their lawful duties, necessitating the court's involvement to ensure the integrity of the investigation.

The political climate has intensified, with the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) filing their own petition, describing the ED's raids as a "targeted" attack on party-related documents. With state assembly elections on the horizon, the TMC has fiercely criticized the ED's actions, labeling them as politically motivated. Key party figures, including Derek O'Brien and Mahua Moitra, recently staged protests outside the office of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, reflecting the escalating tensions and scrutiny surrounding this high-profile case. As the situation develops, both the ED's accusations and the TMC's defenses promise a contentious political landscape in West Bengal.
