Punjab municipal polls: AAP retains its base as Congress, Akalis & BJP fail to set the tone for 2027 ThePrint
The Aam Aadmi Party secured a major political boost ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections by recording a strong performance in the municipal corporation elections across the state. According to data from the Punjab State Election Commission, AAP won 954 out of 1,977 municipal wards, giving it more than 48 per cent of the total seats.
The Congress finished second with 393 wards, while the Shiromani Akali Dal won 192 wards. The Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a major setback, winning only 172 wards, with more than 1,100 candidates losing their security deposits. Independent candidates also performed strongly with 251 wards, while the Bahujan Samaj Party secured just 7 seats.
AAP not only emerged as the single largest party but also secured majorities in several municipal corporations, including Moga, Barnala, Bathinda and Batala. It also became the single largest party in Mohali with 26 wards, showing strong urban support. Congress maintained dominance in Kapurthala, while BJP remained ahead in Pathankot and Abohar.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann (Bhagwant Mann) credited the win to “development politics” and said voters rejected opposition “politics of hatred.” AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal (Arvind Kejriwal) called it a “spectacular mandate” and said the results reflect public support for the state government’s work.
Opposition parties, including Congress, BJP and SAD, accused the ruling AAP government of misusing official machinery and influencing the election process. They claimed administrative pressure was used to tilt results in favour of the ruling party, though AAP has rejected all such allegations.
