ISLAMABAD: Bangladesh has shown potential interest in acquiring JF-17 Thunder fighter jets from Pakistan, according to claims made by the Pakistani military on Wednesday. While the possible deal has not been officially confirmed by Bangladesh, talks on defense procurement took place during a significant meeting at the Pakistan Air Force headquarters.

The JF-17 Thunder, a lightweight and single-engine combat aircraft, is a joint collaboration between China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex. Pakistan has touted the jet's efficacy in previous conflicts with India, though doubts remain regarding its operational effectiveness. In a recent conflict from May 7 to 10, Pakistan reportedly relied largely on Chinese Chengdu J-10 jets, emphasizing the need for clarity on the JF-17's real-world performance.

During the discussions on Tuesday, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan of the Bangladesh Air Force held meetings with Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu. The agenda centered on strengthening operational cooperation, developing training and capacity, and potential collaboration on aerospace initiatives. A noteworthy aspect of the talks was the prospect of procuring the JF-17 aircraft.

As part of the engagement, Khan led a high-level delegation on a visit to major PAF facilities. Sidhu provided insights into Pakistan's recent advancements in defense technology, underscoring a commitment to assist Bangladesh through comprehensive training programs ranging from basic to advanced aviation courses. He also announced a swift delivery of Super Mushshak trainer aircraft along with a long-term support system for operational integration.

Expressions of interest were noted from the Bangladeshi delegation regarding PAF's expertise in operational maintenance and support for its aging fleet. Additionally, discussions included potential integration of air defense radar systems aimed at improving surveillance capabilities. This visit signifies the deepening historical ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh, aiming to enhance defense collaboration for both nations.

The current thaw in relations comes on the heels of the Muhammad Yunus-led government taking charge in 2024, following years of tension stemming from previous governmental actions, highlighting a shared resolve to move forward with mutual defense interests.
