TAMIL NADU: Panic grips Tamil Nadu as commuters rush to stockpile fuel amid fears of shortages following recent geopolitical tensions. Union Minister Suresh Gopi reassures that efforts to control the LPG crisis are underway, while fuel prices surge significantly. The rising demand is impacting local power generation, raising alarms across the state.
TAMIL NADU: Panic ensued in Tamil Nadu as residents flocked to petrol stations to stockpile fuel, fearing an impending shortage due to escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Long lines formed outside fuel stations in major cities as concerned commuters hurried to fill their tanks, driven by recent reports of supply disruptions linked to conflicts in the region.
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, addressed the situation on Thursday, assuring the public that the government is working to bring the LPG crisis under control. “Efforts are underway to secure additional supplies, although some confidential matters related to the Hormuz Strait cannot be disclosed,” Gopi stated during a press conference in Thrissur. “While we are prioritizing emergency services, such as hospitals, we believe the situation remains manageable.”
The minister's comments came amid a backdrop of rising oil prices, which surged over 9% as tensions escalated in West Asia, following Iranian strikes on oil supplies and infrastructure. Brent crude exceeded $100 a barrel, a stark reminder of how international conflicts can directly affect fuel prices domestically. These rising costs have driven consumer anxiety and increased demand for fuel, as many fear further escalations could lead to more severe shortages.
Officials from the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) warned that these developments may also impact power generation, as the central government has prioritized natural gas for other sectors in light of the crisis. Under a recent gazette notification, domestic consumption took precedence over power generation, potentially disrupting energy supply for residents.
As the situation unfolds, residents of Tamil Nadu and across the nation are left grappling with uncertainty surrounding fuel availability and rising costs, highlighting the interconnectedness of global affairs and daily life in India.
