THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil has been arrested for the third time in connection with multiple sexual assault allegations. The latest complaint, lodged via email, includes disturbing allegations of physical assault, financial exploitation, and forced abortion. Following his arrest in Palakkad, Mamkootathil was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. The seriousness of these accusations has raised significant concern among the public.
The Leader of the Opposition, V D Satheeshan, defended the Congress party's swift actions regarding Mamkootathil's suspension and expulsion. "We took decisive action even before receiving formal complaints,” Satheeshan asserted, highlighting the party's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women. The party suspended Mamkootathil upon learning of the allegations and later expelled him after receiving complaints directly addressing the issues.
As investigations into the earlier rape cases continue, they have now been consolidated under the jurisdiction of the Kerala Police Crime Branch. This move aims to streamline the investigation process and help ensure that any additional survivors can come forward. Assistant Inspector General G Poonguzhali will lead the special team assigned to the case, underscoring the state’s seriousness in handling such allegations.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan commented on the situation, suggesting that there may be “more serious revelations” forthcoming, given that many potential victims might be apprehensive about coming forward. He emphasized the state's commitment to investigating the allegations thoroughly, as Mamkootathil faces charges ranging from rape and repeated sexual assaults to transmission of offensive digital content, with penalties expected to be severe under the new laws.
The Kerala High Court had previously paused Mamkootathil's arrest while hearing an anticipatory bail plea, which was ultimately rejected. As the investigation proceeds, the political landscape in Kerala remains tense, with implications for public safety and governmental accountability.
