DELHI: IndiGo has made history with the arrival of India's first Airbus A321 XLR aircraft at Delhi International Airport. This long-range narrow-body jet marks a pivotal development for the airline, enabling it to expand its international operations beyond the previously established short domestic routes. On Wednesday, IndiGo shared images of the aircraft's landing, which it celebrated as a significant homecoming.

The A321 XLR is specifically designed to support longer international flights, allowing IndiGo to strategically plan direct services to previously unviable destinations. With the capacity to fly up to 4,700 nautical miles and remain airborne for nearly 11 hours, this aircraft can accommodate up to 244 passengers, a crucial advancement for the airline which has traditionally focused on short-haul operations. The airline has already announced its intention to operate non-stop flights from Mumbai to Athens, effectively positioning itself as the only Indian carrier offering a direct connection to Greece.

In addition to enhancing its international infrastructure, the A321 XLR opens new opportunities for operating lower-demand routes. This flexibility allows IndiGo to effectively manage varying passenger demand and maintain direct connections throughout the year without relying solely on larger aircraft. As highlighted by Airbus, the A321 XLR presents a means to launch extended routes while keeping operational costs lower, representing a strategic innovation in aviation economics.

IndiGo has been working diligently to broaden its international footprint, having previously ventured into long-haul services. The upcoming flight from Mumbai to Athens is set for January 23, 2026, showcasing the airline's commitment to expanding its global presence while enhancing passenger travel options. Alongside the A321 XLR, IndiGo is scaling its fleet further, ramping up its order of the Airbus A350-900 to a total of 60 aircraft, reinforcing its status as India’s largest airline by fleet size and passenger volume.
