AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government announced plans to amend the rules under the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act on February 20, 2026, aiming to address concerns about the alleged misuse of current marriage registration norms. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi made the announcement in the Assembly, highlighting that the move follows numerous representations from citizens and social organizations advocating for more stringent procedures in the marriage registration process.

Sanghavi raised alarm about what he termed as “love jihad,” suggesting that innocent girls are being ensnared in manipulative situations, which he described as an evolving cultural invasion. To counteract this, the government intends to implement amendments that will involve stricter regulations and heightened safeguards in the marriage registration framework. He urged the necessity for societal vigilance and proposed these changes as essential to preserving cultural values.

As part of the amendment proposal, the government has allowed a 30-day period for public objections and suggestions, encouraging transparency and community involvement. People can voice their opinions via the Health and Family Welfare Department’s website. Sanghavi outlined key changes, including a revised application process requiring couples to submit formal declarations about informing their parents regarding their marriage. Notably, they must also provide parental details, including names, addresses, Aadhaar numbers, and contact information.

Once the Assistant Registrar verifies the application, both sets of parents will receive notifications within ten working days. The Registrar will register the marriage only after a 30-day waiting period, allowing for any objections to be raised. These efforts have garnered support from various legislators, including AAP MLA Hemant Ahir and BJP MLA Lavingji Thakor, who acknowledged the changes as critical for strengthening the existing system and preventing potential exploitation.

The proposed amendments mark a significant step in reforming marriage registration in Gujarat, aiming to create a safer and more accountable environment for prospective couples while also addressing public concerns over cultural integrity and familial rights.
