JAMMU: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has drawn a sharp divide in Jammu and Kashmir politics following its decision to withdraw the permission for an MBBS course at a Jammu college, citing non-compliance with minimum standards. The decision has garnered approval from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who see it as a validation of their ongoing protests, while opposition parties, including the National Conference (NC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Congress, have decried it as a political setback.

BJP's Jammu and Kashmir president, Sat Sharma, praised the NMC's actions, stating, “We welcome the decision, but at the same time, we are committed to securing the future of the students.” He credited the Sangharsh Samiti, a coalition of right-wing groups, for their persistent agitation that has sought to ensure seats in the college are exclusively reserved for students professing the faith in Mata Vaishno Devi.

However, opposition leaders are less enthused. Javed Rana from the PDP criticized the decision as a step backwards, stating, “We are witnessing an atmosphere being created for political maneuvering that divides our society along religious and regional lines.” NC spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar echoed these sentiments, suggesting that the NMC's decision was influenced by the BJP's communal stance, resulting in a lost opportunity for J&K to expand its medical education infrastructure.

The consequences of this decision extend beyond politics. Local student admissions and the state’s healthcare system may be harmed, with hundreds of staff positions at stake. “This discriminatory decision deprives students of advanced education and weakens our healthcare infrastructure,” warned Raman Bhalla, Congress’s Working President in J&K.
