DELHI: In a significant development for West Bengal's electoral processes, the Supreme Court of India has mandated that the Chief Justice of Calcutta deploy additional civil judges as needed for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The directive came during a hearing on February 24, 2026, emphasizing the urgency of the process as the state prepares for upcoming elections.

The Supreme Court highlighted that if the Chief Justice encounters resource challenges, he may request judicial officers from neighboring states, such as Odisha and Jharkhand, whether active or retired, to aid in the verification work. This order aims to ensure a thorough and efficient checking of claims and objections associated with voter registration. The court detailed that only specific documents — including Aadhaar cards and Class 10 pass certificates — will be accepted as proof during this verification process, adding clarity to what voters need to present.

To streamline these efforts, approximately 250 judicial officers have already engaged in the final stages of the SIR process following the Supreme Court's prior orders. As the process unfolded, the apex court has insisted that all relevant documents be submitted without delay, setting a firm deadline for the election registration officers to comply.

Furthermore, the court stated that a comprehensive voters list would be publicly released by the Election Commission on February 28, 2026. Supplementary lists will also be continuously published until the nomination process, ensuring that all eligible voters' details are accounted for. The Supreme Court invoked its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution, asserting that voters listed in any supplementary lists will be considered part of the final electoral roll.
