D.K. Shivakumar Challenges Modi's Advice on Jewelry and Fuel Prices

BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent advice to reduce gold purchases and fuel consumption. He challenged Modi to explain the underlying reasons for the rising costs. Shivakumar emphasized that government officials should lead by example regarding public transport usage before advising citizens.

BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has taken a sharp dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning him for recently advising Indians to abstain from purchasing jewelry for the next year and to reduce their fuel consumption. During a press conference on May 11, Shivakumar demanded that Modi clarify the reasons behind the rising prices of fuel and gold.

"The Prime Minister, who is urging people to avoid buying gold and to limit fuel usage, needs to explain the price hikes," Shivakumar stated. His comments came in response to Modi's guidance, which he characterized as unrealistic, particularly in a country where culturally significant events such as weddings necessitate gold purchases. Shivakumar added, “Can you ask people celebrating weddings not to buy gold?”

The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted that during both difficult and celebratory times, people often take loans against their gold assets. He further questioned the practicality of Modi's advice, recalling past instances where the Prime Minister suggested actions like lighting lamps and clapping during the COVID-19 pandemic, which many viewed as ineffective.

Shivakumar did not stop there—he challenged the Prime Minister to encourage Union government officials and Cabinet Ministers to use public transportation before asking ordinary citizens to make such sacrifices. He declared, "Let those advising others to sacrifice start with their own practices." His remarks aimed to call out perceived hypocrisy in leadership, impressing upon the need for those in power to set a positive example.

Shivakumar's comments reflect broader concerns among citizens regarding the rising costs of essentials amid economic uncertainties. As the government navigates these challenges, the Deputy Chief Minister's critique resonates with many who feel the burden of increased living expenses. By pressing Modi for answers, Shivakumar has opened a vital dialogue around accountability in economic policies.
