NEW DELHI: India officially entered the Pax Silica initiative on February 20, marking a substantial expansion of its technological alliance with the United States during a special event at the AI Impact Summit. By signing the Pax Silica Declaration, along with the bilateral India-U.S. AI Opportunity Partnership, both nations have committed to establishing a framework that secures the vital components of the artificial intelligence era.

The Pax Silica initiative is a U.S.-led strategic alliance launched in December 2022, designed to safeguard the global supply chains crucial for the advancement of artificial intelligence technologies. The initiative’s name invokes “Pax” (Latin for peace and stability) and “Silica,” referring to silicon, a fundamental element in semiconductor manufacturing.

The signing ceremony featured high-ranking representatives from both governments, including S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor. The Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, highlighted the potential for collaborative efforts on supply chain security, emphasizing the importance of the Pax Silica framework in reinforcing the United States-India Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership.

In his remarks, Gor described India’s inclusion in the initiative as strategic and essential, reflecting its engineering and manufacturing capabilities. He further acknowledged India’s growing capacity in critical mineral processing, identifying it as a vital asset to the coalition.

Following the signing, a fireside chat was held to elaborate on the partnership's implications, featuring industry leaders such as Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra and Tata Electronics CEO Dr. Randhir Thakur. Discussions centered on the core mission of Pax Silica, which aims to create secure and innovation-driven supply chains for critical minerals essential for semiconductors and advanced computing systems.

The Joint Statement on the AI Opportunity Partnership outlines several objectives, including promoting regulatory environments that foster innovation, strengthening the physical AI stack, supporting AI developers, and enhancing access to high-performance computing resources. This initiative signifies a crucial step for India in establishing its role within a trusted global supply chain for emerging technologies.
