Iran Gunboats Fire on Tankers in Strait of Hormuz, India Concerned

NEW DELHI: Iranian gunboats fired on two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, prompting international concerns about maritime safety. The Indian government has summoned the Iranian ambassador, expressing deep concern for the safety of Indian-flagged vessels following the attacks. Iran claims to be enforcing new restrictions on maritime passage, citing trust issues with the US.

MUMBAI: In a troubling incident in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps gunboats fired on a tanker transiting the vital maritime passage on Saturday. Reports from the UK Maritime Traffic Organization indicate that another vessel was struck by an unknown projectile during this alarming escalation. This incident comes at a time when Iran has announced the reinstatement of restrictions on ships passing through this critical waterway, citing "repeated breaches of trust" by the United States.

The aggressive action by Iranian forces has raised alarms in New Delhi, as two Indian-flagged vessels were reportedly involved. Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri convened an urgent meeting with Iran’s ambassador, where he expressed India's deep concerns regarding the safety of merchant shipping. Misri emphasized the importance of ensuring secure passage for Indian vessels and urged Iran to quickly facilitate the transit of ships through the Strait.

The UK Maritime Traffic Organization’s advisory revealed that the captain of one affected tanker reported being approached by two Iranian gunboats that opened fire without issuing prior radio warnings. Tracking data indicates a swift change in course for several tankers in the region, with vessels carrying liquefied petroleum gas and crude oil now turning back to the Persian Gulf. Analysts foresee potential disruptions in global oil supply chains as Iranian military activities intensify in this strategically significant area.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced it is reviewing new proposals from the United States following discussions mediated by Pakistan's military chief, General Asim Munir. The council reiterated its determination to maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz, viewing it as essential to national security and regional stability, particularly in light of the ongoing geopolitical tensions. Tehran remains steadfast in its demands, signaling a challenging environment for international diplomacy and maritime operations in the months to come.
