BOMBAY: The Bombay High Court Nagpur Bench has issued notices to the Union government, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Confidence Petroleum India Limited following a petition submitted by six LPG distributors alleging inadequate domestic cooking gas cylinder supplies. The court’s ruling came from a plea seeking urgent directives to bolster the supply of household LPG cylinders amid escalating global supply issues.

Justice Anil S Kilor and Justice Raj D Wakode presided over the hearing, where the petitioners contended that despite government directives prioritizing LPG provisions for domestic users, the distributor faced significant constraints in supply. Specifically, the distributors claimed that repeated requests to halt LPG exports in favor of increased domestic availability have gone unaddressed.

According to the petition, ongoing disruptions in crude oil supply linked to the Iran-Israel conflict have adversely impacted LPG production capacities. This uncertainty, affecting the flow of oil from crucial markets like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Syria, underscored the urgency for the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to ensure that domestic cylinders are prioritized in production and distribution.

Legal representatives for the distributors, Advocates Shyam Dewani and Saahil Dewani, emphasized the crucial role of sufficient domestic supply in maintaining public access to essential cooking resources. The High Court’s intervention reflects increasing anxiety over energy security, and the implications stretch far beyond the courtroom; a stable LPG supply is vital for countless households across India.
