CHENNAI: R. Nallakannu, a revered leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and a freedom fighter, has passed away at the age of 101. His demise occurred at 1:55 p.m. on February 25, 2026, in Chennai after a battle with various age-related ailments. Nallakannu had been receiving treatment at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital since February 1, with his health increasingly deteriorating over the past few days.

Known affectionately as ‘Comrade RNK’, he was a notable figure in Tamil Nadu's political landscape and the last surviving member of the notorious Nellai Conspiracy Case, which played a pivotal role in the fight for India's independence. He leaves behind two daughters, Andal and Kasi Bharathi. The hospital superintendent provided a somber update, detailing that despite medical interventions, Nallakannu's health had declined sharply, ultimately leading to organ failure.

In honor of his long-standing commitment to the party and the ideals of social justice, his body will be displayed at the CPI's State headquarters, Balan Illam, allowing the public to pay their last respects. M. Veerapandian, the state secretary of CPI, confirmed that from 5 p.m. on Wednesday until 3 p.m. on Thursday, members of the public will have the opportunity to honor his legacy. Following this, a procession will take place, and in accordance with Nallakannu's wishes, his body will be donated to Madras Medical College for medical research.

As a sign of respect, all CPI flags will fly at half-mast throughout Tamil Nadu for a week. Nallakannu’s life was deeply rooted in the principles of communism and his contributions to Indian politics will not be forgotten, marking a significant chapter in the state’s history.
