BEIRUT: Israel launched a series of airstrikes on southern and northeastern Lebanon on Thursday, intensifying military action against the militant group Hezbollah. This operation comes as the deadline approaches for Hezbollah's disarmament along the contentious border, just ahead of a significant meeting set for Friday aimed at monitoring a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that halted fighting between the two forces last year.

The latest strikes strike at the heart of Hezbollah infrastructure, targeting military compounds reportedly used for training and staging operations. The Israeli military stated that their actions are necessary to maintain security amidst increased provocations. As the bombings stretched across areas from Mount Rihan in the south to the northeastern Hermel region bordering Syria, a drone attack near the southern town of Taybeh resulted in injuries to four individuals.

The ceasefire compliance committee—comprised of representatives from Lebanon, the United States, France, and the U.N. peacekeeping force—will discuss the enforcement of disarming Hezbollah amidst rising concerns about their armed presence. General Rodolph Haikal, Lebanon's army commander, has been actively engaging with international representatives to bolster support for the Lebanese military's expanded role near the frontier.

However, the Lebanese government has set a lofty expectation. It aims to have the army cleared of Hezbollah's presence in border areas south of the Litani River by year-end. Lebanese parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri framed the Israeli airstrikes as a direct message ahead of the Paris meeting intended to fortify the Lebanese armed forces. He noted, "The fire belt of Israeli airstrikes is to honor the mechanism's meeting tomorrow."

Despite international pressures, including escalating demands from the U.S. for Lebanon to take decisive action regarding Hezbollah, the history of conflict indicates a challenging path ahead. The most recent escalation on October 8, 2023, initiated by Hamas attacks in southern Israel and followed closely by Hezbollah's rocket fire, has led to an ongoing cycle of violence, resulting in over 127 civilian casualties due to Israeli retaliatory strikes. These developments appear to underscore the volatile dynamics of the region and the challenges of achieving lasting peace.
