NEW DELHI: The India AI Impact Summit 2026 welcomed participation from major nations signing a declaration, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The summit also saw protests from Youth Congress members. Key discussions focused on the transformative potential of open data, championed by Shashi Tharoor, alongside the risks of job displacement noted by OECD.

NEW DELHI: The India AI Impact Summit 2026, a pivotal gathering for international cooperation in artificial intelligence, concluded its fifth day with all major countries officially endorsing the AI Impact Summit declaration. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the significance of this collaboration for India during his address, affirming the nation’s strategic efforts to enhance its semiconductor ecosystem through participation in the U.S.-led coalition Pax Silica, aimed at establishing a resilient supply chain for critical minerals and artificial intelligence.

On the ground, the atmosphere was not without its tensions; a brief protest by a group of Indian Youth Congress members occurred within the summit's expo hall. A senior police officer confirmed that approximately ten protestors were detained, illustrating the intersection of politics and technology in a rapidly advancing sector.

Additionally, the Andhra Pradesh government made significant strides by signing seven Memorandums of Understanding focused on bolstering skills and infrastructure in Quantum Computing and AI, a move aimed at positioning Amaravati as a recognized Quantum Valley. This aligns with the overarching goals of the summit to foster international partnerships and innovative technological advancements.

In another notable session, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor advocated for a balanced approach to open data, arguing that while it has immense potential to enhance democratic accountability, appropriate regulatory frameworks must be established to protect individual rights against potential abuses. Tharoor's remarks encapsulated the dual-edged nature of innovation, as he warned against the dangers of unregulated data sharing devolving into mere tokenism.

Furthermore, as highlighted by OECD Secretary General Mathias Cormann, the swift adoption of AI comes with its challenges, notably job displacement risks affecting an estimated 27 percent of the workforce currently in highly automatable positions. Emphasizing the need for widespread training opportunities, Cormann underscored the essential role of effective public policy to harness AI's full potential while safeguarding employment.

As the summit continues, the conversations held over these five days are set to shape the future landscape of AI and technology investment not only in India but also worldwide.
