CHENNAI: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has officially joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, marking a significant political development in the state. DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant met with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin at the DMK headquarters, where she expressed her commitment to the alliance, stating, “Let us journey together for the continuation of the Dravidian model of governance and for Tamil Nadu to progress in all spheres.”
The timing of this alliance comes in light of recent announcements regarding the Rajya Sabha elections, with one-third of the members retiring this year. This has opened a window for the DMK to strategically secure alliances. The DMDK's inclusion in this political coalition is significant, as it provides the party with a chance for representation at the national level—a long-standing ambition ever since promises by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) failed to materialize. Vijayakant emphasized the importance of this alliance by stating that the DMK understood the needs of the DMDK and is willing to concede critical demands.
With the political landscape shifting, the AIADMK is no longer able to comfortably offer seats to smaller parties like the DMDK. As negotiations with the DMK progressed, many anticipated DMDK would align itself with the AIADMK, given the historical ties, but the DMK's proactive outreach changed the dynamics. The DMDK indicated that the number of seats it will contest has yet to be finalized, but the door is open for potential negotiations.
Despite some disagreements, the DMK alliance appears poised for success, bolstered by various collaborating parties including the Congress, Left parties, and others. While ongoing internal negotiations are expected, the general consensus is to unify and present a strong front in the approaching elections, particularly against an AIADMK that is grappling with its own internal coalition challenges. This alliance between the DMK and DMDK signals a shift in Tamil Nadu politics, highlighting a new strategic partnership ahead of a crucial election year.
