BENGALURU: In a remarkable turn of weather events, Bengaluru's Central Business District was battered by heavy rains and hailstorms on Wednesday evening, leading to a significant rainfall total of 111 mm—marking a new record for the month of April. This downpour concluded a notably dry month for the city, which had seen little to no rainfall until now.

According to data from the India Meteorological Department, the Bengaluru city station recorded this impressive amount of rain by 8:30 p.m., while the Kempegowda International Airport reported only trace levels of rainfall throughout the day. In contrast, HAL Airport accumulated about 24.7 mm of rain till 5:30 p.m. Residents were seen maneuvering through flooded streets, particularly on Vittal Mallya Road, further highlighting the storm's impact on daily life.

"This rainfall is a welcome change for the city, especially after such a prolonged dry spell," said an IMD representative. "However, the heavy intensity of the rain can also lead to localized flooding and other challenges for residents." Experts emphasize the need for proper drainage systems to handle such sudden and intense downpours to avoid disruptions in the future.

The importance of this rainfall is underscored by the severe water shortages the city has faced in recent weeks.
