DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Saudi Arabia has accused the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of facilitating the escape of separatist leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi from Yemen. According to a statement from the Saudi military, al-Zubaidi, the head of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), was smuggled out of the country and flown to Abu Dhabi, escalating an already tense situation between the two Gulf nations.

The Saudi statement, released by Major General Turki al-Malki, claimed that al-Zubaidi first traveled by boat to Somalia before being picked up and flown to the UAE capital. This claim underscores the growing rift between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who have been partners in the protracted war in Yemen against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels. The complications arise as al-Zubaidi had reportedly advanced STC fighters into government-controlled areas, raising alarms in Riyadh about potential plans for secession.

In response to the accusations, Somalia's Immigration and Citizenship Agency announced an investigation into the alleged unauthorized use of its airspace for the operation. They emphasized that such actions are unacceptable and undermine the country's sovereignty. The STC, which has previously been supported by the UAE, did not address the smuggling allegation directly, instead maintaining that al-Zubaidi remained in Aden, highlighting the conflicting narratives between the involved parties.

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed al-Jaber, acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating that discussions were held with STC officials regarding al-Zubaidi's actions, which he described as harmful to their cause. Al-Jaber affirmed ongoing efforts to stabilize the south, pointing towards a forthcoming conference in Riyadh intended to address the region's grievances.

Amid these tensions, the war in Yemen continues to devastate the country, leading to an immense humanitarian crisis with thousands of casualties. The United Nations has highlighted the pressing need for political dialogue to alleviate the situation, noting the fragile state of partnerships in the region as the divisions between former allies deepen.
