Bangladesh's Interim Government Claims Success Post-Hasina Departure

DHAKA: The interim government in Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, defends its record after Sheikh Hasina's departure. Press secretary Shafiqul Alam claims successful reforms and improved law enforcement. He critiques Hasina's reliance on India and emphasizes national autonomy.

DHAKA: In the wake of Sheikh Hasina's swift exit from power, the interim government of Bangladesh, under Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohammad Yunus, is making a bold claim: its time in office has been nothing short of productive. Press secretary Shafiqul Alam recently elaborated on the government's achievements during a nearly hour-long interview.

Alam confidently stated, "Professor Yunus did an amazing job. He oversaw a big recovery of the economy. The government has introduced widespread reforms across all vital sectors." He emphasized that legal reforms have been essential to safeguard human rights, particularly in contrast to the previous administration, which he claimed neglected these rights in favor of a greater reliance on external influences, particularly India.

"The foreign policy under the previous administration was, in a way, leased out to another country," Alam remarked. He believes Bangladesh, home to roughly 180 million people, needs to assert its identity on the global stage. "It’s time for our country to display its pride and independence," he added.

Despite ongoing concerns regarding law and order within the country, Alam firmly rejected the notion that it remains a pressing issue. "I don't think so," he said. "The law and order situation has stabilized." His stance appears to challenge the narratives from critics who argue that instability continues to plague the nation following massive protests and governmental changes.

As Bangladesh prepares for its first elections since Hasina's departure, Alam’s assessments reflect a government focused on building its identity and addressing regional perceptions in a post-revolution environment. How the populace reacts to these claims in the upcoming elections could define the future trajectory of this newly formed interim government, as well as the nation itself.
